Directions: From Westport, head towards the Quay, passing the entrance to Westport House on the right. Turn right at the Towers, and follow the Quay past the museum and football pitch to the car park. Description: Overlooking Clew Bay, this area is excellent in the winter for waders, geese, ducks and gulls. The nearby Landfill Site on the R311 Castlebar to Newport Road can often bring sightings of unusual gulls. Best Time to Visit: Winter Neighbouring Site: Mulranny Birds to look out for: Geese - Barnacle & Light-bellied Geese, Waders - Dunlin, Oystercatcher, Curlew, Turnstone, Bar-tailed Godwit, Redshank Ducks - Shelduck,Wigeon, Teal, Mallard Gulls - Common and Black-headed Also look out for - Little Egret, Heron, Cormorant, Kingfisher, Little Grebe, Merganser, Mute Swan Rare / Scarce / Unusual Birds: Spooonbill (Sept 2005 - 10 juveniles for 3 weeks, 2 ringed in Holland earlier in the year) White's Thrush (shot near Westport 09/01/1885 - now in the National Museum, Dublin) American Golden Plover Franklin's Gull (4th - 16th Dec 1999, at the Landfill Site at Newport) American Herring Gull (12th - 16th December 1999 at the Landfill Site near Newport) Ivory Gull (in 1905, 1998 - 2 seen at the Landfill Site near Newport) Squacco Heron (Westport 1912 - now in the National Museum, Dublin) back to top |
